Tesla Roadster 2 Offers Optional Cold-Gas Thrusters for $245,000

· Automobile · Engadget, Wired

Tesla has officially introduced its next-generation Roadster at a SpaceX testing site in McGregor, Texas, following a nine-year delay since the initial prototype. The vehicle utilizes a suction system to maintain grip while driving upside-down and features cold-gas thrusters for flight-like maneuvers. While the base vehicle requires a $5,000 reservation, the optional Thrust package, which includes the suction and acceleration systems, costs an additional $245,000. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028, with an invite-only Rocket version also planned. The demonstration featured an Optimus robot in the driver's seat, though company officials confirmed the stunts were pre-programmed.

Why it matters

The high cost of the performance packages positions the Roadster 2 as a niche luxury product rather than a mass-market electric vehicle.
