Tesla Sustains EV Sales Momentum Despite US Market Challenges
· Automobile · TechCrunch, The Independent, MarketWatch
Tesla sold more than 480,000 electric vehicles in the third quarter, marking its second consecutive strong period following a slow start to the year. The company built 464,391 vehicles and delivered 486,532 units during the quarter, topping Wall Street consensus estimates. However, total deliveries remained below last year's record third quarter of 497,000 vehicles, which was driven by an expiring U.S. tax credit. Domestic sales fell nearly 20% year-over-year due to an aging consumer model lineup, the commercial struggles of the Cybertruck, and public backlash over CEO Elon Musk's political involvement. To offset the U.S. decline, Tesla expanded its footprint in Europe and China while launching new autonomous ride operations and electric semi-truck production.
Why it matters
The divergence between Tesla's declining U.S. sales and its rebounding international momentum underscores how political backlash and product stagnation at home can be offset by robust demand in overseas EV markets.
