Tesla to cease Cybertruck production by 2027, redirects factory to Cybercab robotaxis

· Technology · TechCrunch, Engadget, CNBC

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the company will stop making the Cybertruck next year, shifting factory capacity to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis in Austin, Texas. The futuristic EV, first delivered to customers in late 2023, saw underwhelming sales with just tens of thousands sold over three years, far below Musk's 2023 prediction of 250,000 annual units. Tesla has spent the last two months testing Cybercabs on Austin streets with no major incidents and plans to expand to Dallas later this month. The decision marks the third product discontinuation as Tesla pivots toward AI and robotics, following the end of Model S and Model X production to focus on Optimus humanoid robots.

Why it matters

Tesla owners and prospective Cybertruck buyers face the end of the futuristic EV lineup as the company redirects resources toward its robotaxi ambitions, while the broader electric pickup market loses a high-profile contender.
