Texas Governor Seeks Ban on H-1B Workers in Schools

· World · India Today, Hindustan Times

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has asked lawmakers to prohibit public school districts from hiring workers through the federal H-1B visa program, expanding a January freeze that applied only to state universities. He also wants schools barred from accepting gifts, money or property from foreign sources, and from contracting with foreign governments, companies or individuals. Abbott cited concerns over Islamic and Chinese influence, noting that the Austin Independent School District received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Qatar for Arabic language instruction and that some districts participate in Confucius Classroom programmes linked to China. The proposal was directed to the Texas Legislature with the aim of limiting foreign influence in classroom content and staffing.

Why it matters

The ban would restrict H-1B visa holders, many of whom are Indian tech professionals, from teaching in Texas schools and could reduce foreign funding for cultural and language programs, altering the composition of school staff and curricula.
