There is no such thing as a ‘UN map with borders: Guterres

· World · The Hindu

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the UN has not published any official map with borders, clarifying a controversy over a world map used during the recent UN General Assembly resolution. In an exclusive interview with The Hindu in New Delhi, Mr. Guterres said the geospatial map in question was created by an NGO and was not an official UN publication. India had previously written to the United Nations to object to anomalies in the depiction of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin in that map. The map had omitted the specific Indian and Chinese claim lines used in previous UN documents. Mr. Guterres clarified that the UN Geospatial map was merely indicative and that the global body does not define territorial borders.

Why it matters

The clarification addresses Indian diplomatic objections over the cartographic depiction of sensitive border regions like Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin on UN-hosted platforms.
