Third Measles Death Reported in Pennsylvania Amid US Outbreak

· World · Al Jazeera, CBS News

A 40-year-old unvaccinated woman in Pennsylvania has died from measles, marking the third fatality in the United States during the current outbreak. Health officials in Jefferson County confirmed the death occurred Saturday, noting the patient suffered from complications associated with the highly contagious disease. This follows two previous measles-related deaths reported in August in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County, which also involved unvaccinated individuals. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control has recorded 3,294 measles cases across more than 45 states so far in 2026. The state of Pennsylvania alone has documented 676 cases this year, with 124 patients requiring hospitalisation.

Why it matters

The rise in measles cases and associated fatalities underscores growing public health concerns regarding declining vaccination rates in specific US communities. The situation has led to public friction between local health authorities and the federal administration over the management and characterisation of the outbreak.
