Thousands of Dead Fish Found Along Yamuna Banks in Delhi

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

Thousands of dead fish, including Tilapia and Common Carp, were found washed ashore and floating in shallow water along the Yamuna river near Burari in North Delhi on October 14, 2026. The incident occurred in the stretch upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage, where fish mortality has occurred repeatedly. Bhim Singh Rawat from the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People noted that the mass mortality right after the monsoon season poses a severe threat to aquatic biodiversity. Official records submitted to the National Green Tribunal previously identified numerous illegal industrial discharge points leading from Haryana towns into the river. Locals allege that the fish deaths resulted from chemical waste discharged upstream through canals, though the exact cause remains unverified.

Why it matters

Recurring industrial pollution and mass fish deaths in the Yamuna threaten the river's fragile aquatic ecosystem and highlight failures in waste management across state boundaries.
