· India · India Today, NDTV
Thousands of voter ID cards linked to Indore's Rau Assembly constituency were recovered from a ghat along the Narmada riverbank in Mandleshwar village, located 65 km from Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district headquarters. The discovery emerged after a video of the scattered cards circulated on social media, prompting local police and revenue officials to seize the documents and open an inquiry. Maheshwar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Purva Mandloi deployed a tehsildar to investigate the incident and establish the total count of cards. Police official Shweta Shukla noted that authorities received a written complaint and tasked the station house officer with leading the probe. Meanwhile, Congress workers staged a protest outside the Mandleshwar police station, handing over hundreds of cards and demanding an official FIR for alleged vote theft.
Why it matters
The recovery of thousands of voter credentials in an unsecured public area threatens electoral integrity and has triggered sharp political confrontation between local administration and opposition parties in Madhya Pradesh.
