Thousands Protest in Turkey Over Media Crackdown, Jailed Journalists
· World · Times of India, Al Jazeera
Thousands of people protested in Istanbul and Ankara on Saturday against the Turkish government's crackdown on independent media and the jailing of journalists. Demonstrators, including journalists, union members, and opposition supporters, chanted slogans demanding press freedom and the release of imprisoned journalists. Police estimated approximately 3,000 people attended the Ankara demonstration. The Turkish Journalists' Union reported that 11 journalists have been jailed and several media outlets shut down in the past two months. Earlier this month, authorities raided Halk TV, halting broadcasts and installing a government-appointed administrator, and also shut down digital news outlet T24's website and social media over "LGBT propaganda."
Why it matters
The protests highlight growing concerns over press freedom and human rights in Turkey, impacting journalists' ability to report independently and the public's access to diverse information. This situation could further strain Turkey's international relations and democratic standing.
