Three-Month-Old Tiger Cub Released in Kaziranga After Net Rescue
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
A three-month-old male tiger cub was rescued from a kitchen garden net behind a house in Natungaon village, Assam’s Biswanath district, on September 17, 2026. Wildlife veterinarians treated the cub after its forelimbs were found entangled, and officials believe it had wandered into the village after being separated from its mother due to strong river currents. The cub was shifted to the Central Range Office of Kaziranga’s Biswanath Division for observation before release. On September 23, the cub was released in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve after a camera trap confirmed recent presence of a tigress in the area. Pugmark evidence was found 200 metres from the release site on the same day, and monitoring will continue over the next few weeks. The rescue team had earlier treated an injured wild elephant with a spear wound and corneal opacity at Kacharigaon Tea Estate in Sonitpur district.
Why it matters
The release supports conservation efforts for Bengal tigers in Assam, a key habitat for the species. Successful rehabilitation and monitoring of rescued cubs contribute to population stability in Kaziranga, one of India’s most important tiger reserves.
