· India · NDTV, Zee News, Times of India
Three new judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court of India, bringing the working strength of the apex court to 37 judges. The newly appointed judges are Justice Sunita Agarwal, who previously served as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, former Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. These appointments follow recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium to fill existing vacancies in the judiciary. The swearing-in ceremonies are scheduled to take place at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi. With these additions, the court operates closer to its sanctioned strength of 34 judges, helping address the backlog of pending cases.
Why it matters
The appointment of three high court chief justices bolsters the judicial capacity of the Supreme Court to manage its extensive caseload and accelerates dispute resolution for litigants across the country.
