Three premature newborns died after a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the government-run Amravati District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra on Monday. The incident occurred at around 3:30 am in a third-floor room of the facility. Preliminary information indicates the blaze was triggered by a technical fault in a thermal unit. Nine infants were inside the affected room when the fire started. Hospital staff and attendants evacuated all nine babies, but three succumbed to their injuries. The victims were premature infants undergoing treatment for conditions including jaundice. Amravati Deputy Commissioner of Police Shyam Ghuge stated that the fire was confined to a single room and extinguished within 30 minutes. Authorities will investigate the exact cause of the fire and examine whether required fire-safety norms were followed at the hospital.
