Three suicides in five years devastate Yavatmal farmer family amid drought

· India · Indian Express, The Independent

Nima Malekar has lost her husband and two children to suspected suicide over five years, all linked to farm distress and delays in securing borewell electricity connections. Her elder son Nikhil died in March 2021, younger son Tapaveen in October 2024, and husband Dnyaneshwar on July 22, 2026. The family’s five-acre cotton farm in Pimplapur village, Yavatmal, has faced recurring crop losses and inadequate rainfall. Maharashtra declared drought in 265 of 358 tehsils last week, with Yavatmal recording 128 farmer suicides between January and June 2026. Nima says they worked hard but saw no return, leaving her alone in a house built this year under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. She now splits time between her land and her brother’s home in Kosala village, carrying on as neighbours help manage her farm.

Why it matters

The tragedy highlights the deepening agrarian crisis in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, where drought and bureaucratic delays in farm infrastructure are pushing families to despair. It underscores the human cost of delayed government support for smallholder farmers amid worsening climate stress.
