Three Workers Die While Cleaning Septic Tank in Odisha Village

· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express

Three workers died on Wednesday inside a newly constructed septic tank in Tarapaguda village within Odisha's Rayagada district. Police identified the victims as Harishchandra Bir, Prakash Lima, and Alok Karad, who entered the tank to clean it and lost consciousness due to toxic gases. A rescue team from the Padmapur fire station pulled them out, but they were declared dead upon arrival at the Padmapur Community Health Centre. Local residents gathered at the site in protest, and Padmapur MLA Satyajit Gamang visited the location. The incident follows a similar tragedy on May 26 where six people died in Kalahandi district's Karlakhunta village while removing shuttering from a septic tank.

Why it matters

The deaths highlight persistent safety violations and lack of protective gear during sanitation work, prompting local outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols.
