Tibet Resistance Film 'Four Rivers Six Ranges' Sparks Debate Amid Changing Geopolitics

· Entertainment · The Independent, deccanherald, Deccan Herald

The historical drama film 'Four Rivers Six Ranges' has brought renewed attention to the Tibetan resistance fighters who helped the Dalai Lama escape Tibet in 1959. Directed by Shenpenn Khymsar, the movie was filmed covertly in Nepal's Mustang region and features first-time actor Tenzin Rigzin Phurpatsang, whose grandfather died fighting Chinese forces. The film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam before its Indian theatrical release on September 18, which faced delays as Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India. Chinese state media has condemned the film for promoting separatism and rewriting history. The release coincides with a period where the 91-year-old Dalai Lama's succession plan looms and India and Beijing cautiously work to repair bilateral ties.

Why it matters

The film highlights historical tensions and diaspora identity at a delicate time for regional diplomacy between India and China.
