Tigray Forces Declare Full-Blown War in Ethiopia Amid Opposition Alliance
· World · Al Jazeera, France 24
Tigrayan forces in northern Ethiopia have stated they are in a full-blown war with the national army, marking the end of four years of fragile peace. Fighting is currently underway across three regions, including Tigray. This week, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front joined former rivals to form an opposition alliance with the stated goal of overthrowing the government in Addis Ababa. This development represents the largest escalation since the 2022 peace deal that ended the civil war. Both the government and the TPLF accuse each other of breaching the terms of that agreement, while several commitments remain unfulfilled.
Why it matters
A renewed civil war threatens regional stability in the Horn of Africa and risks derailing fragile peace accords, potentially triggering fresh displacement and humanitarian crises.
