Tigress Released in West Bengal’s Buxa Tiger Reserve, Three More Planned
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released a three-year-old tigress named T138 in West Bengal’s Buxa Tiger Reserve on October 2, 2026, marking the start of World Wildlife Week. The tigress was translocated from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve to reintroduce big cats in Buxa, which had no resident tigers prior. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced plans to release three more tigers in the reserve within the next two months. Camera traps had previously spotted a tiger in Buxa, believed to have wandered from Bhutan or Assam’s Manas National Park. The translocation is part of a five-year effort to augment tiger population in the reserve under landscape conservation initiatives.
Why it matters
The reintroduction aims to restore tiger presence in Buxa, supporting national conservation goals and boosting biodiversity in the region. It also highlights inter-state cooperation between West Bengal and Bihar for wildlife translocation.
