TikTok US Seeks Multiple Gigawatts of Computing Capacity
· Technology · CNBC
TikTok's U.S. entity is looking to secure multiple gigawatts of computing capacity, aiming for four gigawatts by the early 2030s, according to sources. The company, officially TikTok USDS Joint Venture, primarily uses Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in the U.S. and intends for Oracle to remain its main cloud provider. This move comes as companies globally seek more compute capacity for growing artificial intelligence workloads. TikTok U.S. was established in 2026 following a U.S. presidential order for divestiture from its Chinese parent, ByteDance. The company plans to retrain and update its recommendation algorithm, which is built on machine learning, using U.S. user data and securing it in Oracle's U.S. cloud environment.
Why it matters
This significant demand for computing power indicates TikTok U.S.'s expansion into advanced AI products and its commitment to localizing its operations in the U.S. It also highlights the increasing global competition for digital infrastructure driven by AI development.
