Timur Turlov Elected FIDE President as Anand Named Deputy

Kazakh businessperson Timur Turlov was elected as the eighth president of the international chess governing body FIDE on Saturday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Turlov secured the victory at the organisation's General Assembly following a closely contested vote among member federations. Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand has been appointed as Turlov's deputy. Turlov succeeds Arkady Dvorkovich, whose eight-year tenure ended after he withdrew his bid for a third term following inclusion in a European Union sanctions package. Of FIDE's 204 member federations, 202 were eligible to vote, with the Russian and Rwandan federations suspended.
