Tony Fadell Critiques First Wave Of AI Gadgets At MIT Future Fest
· Technology · TechCrunch
Tony Fadell, credited as the father of the iPod and co-creator of the iPhone, told MIT Future Fest that the first wave of AI devices — Rabbit R1, Humane AI pin and Limitless pendant — failed because they solved no real user need. He said these products were merely interesting technology for geeks and did not apply to most people's lives. Fadell argued that having a trustworthy personal AI assistant requires building trust over time, akin to hiring a human assistant, and is currently less than 0.01% of the world population has ever had a human assistant. He noted that Meta recently launched its all-purpose AI assistant, Muse, but users have reason to be wary after a security researcher discovered a serious vulnerability.
Why it matters
Consumers investing in Gen 1 AI hardware risk wasting money on devices that do not solve genuine pain points, and the industry faces a trust barrier before personal AI assistants achieve mainstream adoption.
