· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Times of India
The Kozhikode Cyber police arrested transgender makeup artist Jaanmoni Das in connection with a case registered over alleged derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mahila Morcha State president Navya Haridas filed the initial complaint last month, citing an objectionable video circulated on social media regarding a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Police registered a case under Sections 192 and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleging the content was circulated to cause unrest and disturb public peace. Following preliminary investigation and interrogation on Thursday, Ms. Das was arrested and subsequently released on bail. Ms. Das had earlier issued a clarification stating she was not proficient in Malayalam and that the remarks stemmed from a language error, but Mahila Morcha activists rejected the explanation.
Why it matters
The case highlights the growing intersection of social media expression, political complaints, and cyber policing under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions.
