Trinamool Congress Names Candidates for Bengal By-Polls, Ending Mamata Banerjee Speculation
· India · The Hindu, NDTV
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, has officially nominated Sanchita Pradhan (Dey) for the Nandigram Assembly bypoll in South Bengal and Rabiul Alam Chowdhury for Rejinagar, putting to rest earlier speculation that Banerjee herself would contest. The bypolls, scheduled for October 6, follow Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s resignation from Nandigram. The party also fielded Abdul Salam for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Tensions persist within TMC as the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction refuses to contest if Banerjee runs from Nandigram, while both factions clash over the party’s official grass-and-twin-flowers symbol. Opposition parties, including the CPI(M)-led Left Front and Congress, have already nominated candidates for the two constituencies.
Why it matters
The bypolls will test TMC’s internal divisions and its ability to retain support in South Bengal, where it lost heavily in the 2026 Assembly elections. The contest over the party symbol and the Ritabrata Banerjee faction’s threat to field independents could further destabilise the party’s unity, impacting its future governance in West Bengal. Voters in Nandigram and Rejinagar will directly influence the political landscape ahead of the 2026 Lok Sabha elections.
