Trump Falsely Claims Uncle Invented Radar During 2026 Midterm Vote

· World · Hindustan Times, France 24

President Donald Trump claimed on October 24 while voting in Palm Beach, Florida, that his uncle John G. Trump invented radar. Social media users and a community note on X quickly corrected the assertion, noting that radar originated earlier through work by scientists including Heinrich Hertz, Christian Hülsmeyer and Robert Watson-Watt. Dr John Trump, a professor of engineering at MIT, contributed to World War II radar development and deployment at MIT's Radiation Laboratory but did not invent the technology. He also designed X-ray generators for cancer therapy and was entrusted by the FBI to examine Nikola Tesla's papers after Tesla's death in 1943. Trump has repeatedly referenced his uncle in past speeches and interviews, including at a 2024 New Hampshire rally. MIT acknowledged Dr Trump's role in D-Day operations in a June post but did not credit him with inventing radar.

Why it matters

The episode illustrates how a sitting president's off-the-cuff historical claims can be instantly fact-checked in public, shaping perceptions of credibility ahead of the 2026 midterms.
