Trump Says Putin Wants Ukraine Settlement and Blames Zelenskyy
· World · The Hindu, Al Jazeera
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly wants to reach a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in the United States, Mr. Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of resisting a compromise and failing to hold an election since the conflict began in 2022. The remarks followed a phone call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin on Friday, alongside Washington's decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel. Mr. Trump also claimed Mr. Zelenskyy disobeyed orders by striking Russian refineries, warning that such attacks risk worsening global fuel shortages caused by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Mr. Zelenskyy dismissed the diesel arrangement with Moscow as a weak decision, as U.S., Ukrainian, and European negotiators met in Miami.
Why it matters
The shift in U.S. policy toward Russian energy sanctions and direct pressure on Kyiv could alter diplomatic efforts and military strategy in the ongoing conflict.
