Trump says U.S. cutting $3.8 billion annual security assistance to Israel

· World · The Hindu, New York Times, Bloomberg

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington is ending a 10-year security assistance accord with Israel that provided $3.8 billion in annual military financing until 2028. Mr. Trump stated in an interview on Fox and Friends that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed with the decision, asserting that Israel no longer needs the financial support. The bilateral deal, signed in 2016 under former U.S. President Barack Obama, began in 2019 and provided funds for weapons purchases. Israel has received more than $300 billion in U.S. economic and military assistance since 1948, making it the largest cumulative recipient of American aid. The announcement faced criticism from Israeli opposition politician Gadi Eisenkot, who said the defense establishment learned of the strategic shift through the media.

Why it matters

The end of the $3.8 billion annual security assistance shifts the long-standing military alliance between Washington and Jerusalem, as Israel pursues greater military autonomy.
