US President Donald Trump posted this week that "WE DON'T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!" even as he imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian aluminium and acknowledged that the United States "desperately needs" the metal. Roughly 4 million barrels of Canadian crude flow south every day, supplying about 20% of total US petroleum consumption, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Canada is the US's second-largest trading partner after Mexico, with $872 billion in goods and services exchanged last year, and Canadian heavy crude feeds Midwest refineries built specifically to process it. McGill University political science professor Daniel Beland called Trump's claim "absolutely false," pointing to US reliance on Canadian oil, natural gas, and deeply integrated auto supply chains.
