Tulu's wait ends, DKS delivers what BJP promised to Karnataka's Hindutva heartland

The Karnataka government led by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has accorded Tulu the status of the state's second additional official language. Meeting in Mangaluru for the first time, the state Cabinet fulfilled a long-standing demand first promised by BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa in 2008. Tulu has been spoken for centuries across coastal Karnataka, a stronghold where the BJP has maintained electoral dominance. Alongside the language recognition, the Cabinet approved a draft notification to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district and cleared projects worth approximately Rs 32,611 crore. The package also includes a separate tourism policy for the coastal and Malnad regions and an upgrade for Mangaluru's fisheries college.
