Rescue teams digging through a blocked hydropower tunnel at the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station in Nepal successfully reached two survivors on Friday. Tunnelling expert Arnold Dix described the operation as facing layer upon layer of challenges, starting with an avalanche that completely buried the original tunnel entrance underground. Rescuers used old topographic maps, satellite imagery, and helicopter footage to triangulate the entrance position before beginning excavation. Clearing the blocked tunnel required precise explosives managed by the Nepalese army, alongside excavators and pumping machines to drain trapped water. Workers finally dug a tiny passageway the size of a person through the debris at the top of the tunnel to reach the trapped men.

The operation highlights the extreme engineering and logistical hurdles faced by rescue workers responding to devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border that have killed 1,300 people. The successful extraction offers a rare breakthrough in ongoing efforts to locate dozens of individuals still trapped.
