Two Syrian Energy Pipelines Damaged in Separate Sabotage Attacks

· World · Al Jazeera, Times of India

Two separate pipelines carrying gas and oil products were damaged in Syria, marking the latest disruptions to the country's energy infrastructure. An explosion struck the Jbessa gas pipeline in the southern Hasakah province in the late afternoon, following an earlier fuel leak caused by damage to a pipeline transporting oil products from Baniyas to Homs in the Hadida area. The state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company confirmed the gas pipeline incident was a sabotage attack, while state media reported the Baniyas-Homs leak was linked to an attempted fuel theft. Repair crews have isolated the affected sections and closed surrounding valves, while alternative arrangements maintain gas flows to power stations. Authorities have not named a suspect or group responsible for the latest incidents.

Why it matters

The attacks threaten Syria's ongoing efforts to revive its war-damaged energy sector and secure domestic fuel supplies.
