The total U.S. government debt reached $40.05 trillion as of Monday, according to data from the Treasury Department. This figure marks a significant increase from the $19.4 trillion recorded a decade ago. In July alone, the government reported a $432.3 billion deficit, the highest monthly total since March 2021. Interest payments on this debt have reached nearly $1.2 trillion this year, making it one of the largest budget expenditures alongside Social Security and Medicare.
