· World · Times of India, The Hindu, Wall Street Journal

The United Arab Emirates has ordered a specialized Public Prosecution investigation into a mid-air incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073 after an alleged attempt by an Omani co-pilot to crash the aircraft. Attorney-General Counsellor Dr Hamad Al Shamsi directed investigators to examine all circumstances and motives, including potential links to terrorist activity, prior planning, or external direction. The flight, travelling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv with Israeli passengers onboard, was diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia following an altercation in the cockpit. Crew members intervened and secured the aircraft after Indian captain Smit Machchhar sustained injuries during the struggle. Saudi authorities will conduct the initial investigation before handing the accused pilot over to the UAE for further legal proceedings.

Why it matters

The security investigation addresses a serious breach of international aviation safety and examines potential cross-border terrorism motives in the Middle East.
