UC Berkeley Professor Warns of Declining Student Math Skills

UC Berkeley mathematics professor Zvezdelina Stankova has raised concerns that calculus students are arriving at the university with significant gaps in foundational math skills. Stankova stated that some students are five to eight years behind, often requiring her to use class time to teach basic algebra and fractions. Data cited in her report shows that the percentage of students considered ready for calculus fell from 71% before 2020 to 44% between 2021 and 2023. She attributed this decline to pandemic-era disruptions and the suspension of standardized testing requirements for university admissions. By the 2022-23 academic year, more than one-third of calculus students were identified as having severe mathematics deficits.
