UK and Google Test Flight Path Changes to Reduce Contrails

The British government has launched a 30-month trial known as Operation Blue Skies to mitigate the climate impact of aviation by adjusting flight paths. During the next two winters, air traffic controllers will direct hundreds of flights over the North Atlantic's Shanwick Oceanic Control Area to deviate up to 2,000 feet in altitude. Google UK is providing AI-powered forecasts to identify specific atmospheric regions where condensation trails, or contrails, are likely to form. These trails trap heat and are estimated to contribute 1% to 2% of global warming.
