UK Begins Early Release of Prisoners Amid Overcrowding
· World · The Independent, BBC News
Hundreds of prisoners walked free from jails across England and Wales on Thursday in the first wave of the government's early release scheme aimed at easing chronic prison overcrowding. Approximately 4,500 inmates are scheduled for release in stages over the next year, with about 700 offenders leaving custody on Thursday. While criminals convicted of rape, serious child sex offences, and manslaughter are exempt, domestic abusers remain eligible for release. Domestic Abuse Commissioner Dame Nicole Jacobs criticized the policy, warning that survivors will live in fear due to inadequate safeguards. The Ministry of Justice defended the rollout, insisting that risk assessments and monitoring conditions are in place.
Why it matters
Releasing domestic abusers early under prison capacity pressure exposes vulnerable victims to ongoing safety risks and strains underfunded probation support services.
