UK Home Office Breached Human Rights of Detained Interfaith Couple

The High Court in London has ruled that the UK Home Office breached the human rights of an interfaith married couple by holding them in separate accommodation prior to a planned deportation to India. The Muslim man and Hindu wife entered the UK in 2022, sought asylum in March 2025 over fear of persecution, and were detained in September last year before being released in October. Deputy High Court Judge Simon Tinkler stated that the Home Office admitted it had no joint housing facilities and that its claims of considering shared accommodation were false. While the judge dismissed the challenge against the refusal of asylum, he ruled the couple are entitled to financial damages to be calculated at a county court. The judge also criticised the department for misleading the court and failing in its duty of candour.
