UK Launches Major Study To Investigate Rising Bowel Cancer In Young Adults
· World · The Independent, Sky News
Researchers have launched a nationwide UK study named Prospect-UK to investigate the rising number of early-onset bowel cancer diagnoses among adults under the age of 50. Scientists from King's College London and health science company Zoe are seeking 250,000 adult volunteers to participate in long-term dietary and lifestyle monitoring. Participants will complete online surveys linking their daily habits and food intake to electronic health records, while a subgroup will provide blood and stool samples. Early-onset bowel cancer cases have increased substantially globally since 1990, with the UK experiencing one of the steepest rises. The precise triggers behind this demographic shift remain unknown, though researchers suspect factors like obesity and highly processed foods play a role.
Why it matters
Young adults globally face an unexplained surge in bowel cancer rates, making large-scale dietary data vital for future prevention.
