The UK government is cutting corners on international climate finance commitments, according to a new report by the International Development Committee. MPs warned that foreign aid budget reductions will effectively end bilateral climate aid relationships with numerous vulnerable nations. The report criticizes accounting changes that allow standard humanitarian aid to be counted toward climate spending targets. The government has committed £6bn for climate finance over the three financial years from 2026-27 to 2028-29, down from £11.6bn over the previous five years. Committee chair Sarah Champion stated that the cuts risk undermining the UK's credibility as a global climate donor just as a super El Niño weather event intensifies worldwide crises.
