UK Police Seize Record 7,049 Illegal E-Bikes in One Year

Police forces across the UK confiscated 7,049 illegal e-bikes in the 12 months ending 19 May, marking an 83 per cent increase from the previous year. Authorities report that many of these machines are modified to exceed the legal speed limit of 15.5mph, with some reaching speeds of up to 70mph. Law enforcement officials and politicians are calling for stricter regulations, as these non-compliant bikes are increasingly linked to criminal activity, including phone theft and drug trafficking. The Metropolitan Police recorded the highest number of seizures at 2,367, followed by Leicestershire and Police Scotland. While many illegal units are purchased online as conversion kits, they are currently treated as motor vehicles under UK law if they fail to meet safety standards for electrically assisted pedal cycles.
