UK Warns Academics Over China Front Company Espionage Risk

MI5 has issued a public alert warning that more than 100 UK-linked academics have unwittingly assisted Chinese espionage operations. The security service identified the China General Technology Research Institute as a front with strong ties to the Chinese Ministry of State Security. Officials stated that the institute funded academic research designed to improve Chinese espionage capabilities in fields such as artificial intelligence and cyber security. Security minister Dan Jarvis said he has written to all university vice-chancellors urging them to immediately cut ties with the organisation. The warning highlights growing risks under the National Security Act, raising the prospect of potential criminal charges for aiding a foreign state.
