UK Watchdog Bans AI App Ads for Promoting Sexual Objectification
· Technology · BBC News
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned five social media advertisements for AI companion and video-generating apps for promoting the sexual objectification of women. The regulator identified ads that encouraged users to create sexually explicit content from images without consent, including one instance featuring a girl under 18. The banned content included prompts for users to upload photos of their "crush" to generate explicit videos. Meta has already removed the offending advertisements from its platforms. The watchdog utilized an AI-powered monitoring system to identify the violations and stated that such content poses a risk of real-world harm.
Why it matters
This ruling sets a strict precedent for AI developers and social media platforms regarding the non-consensual creation of explicit content, aligning with recent UK laws against deepfake imagery.
