Ukraine Launches 1,000 Drones Amid Strained US Alliance
· World · CNBC, Al Jazeera
Ukraine launched over 1,000 drones against targets across Russia, causing fires at energy facilities in St. Petersburg and disrupting airport operations. The military action coincides with deepening diplomatic friction between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the US administration over recent policy shifts. President Donald Trump has defended his decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel and suspend duties on Russian goods, a move Zelenskyy publicly criticized as counterproductive to Ukraine's defense. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent labeled Zelenskyy's public criticism of US support as reckless, while Ukraine also alleges that Washington is restricting its access to Starlink and Starshield networks.
Why it matters
The growing diplomatic rift between Kyiv and Washington threatens to undermine Ukraine's military capabilities and its ability to sustain the war effort against Russia.
