Ukrainian Diver Arrested in Croatia Over Nord Stream Bombing
· World · Al Jazeera, The Independent, Reuters
Croatian authorities arrested Ukrainian diver Volodymyr Zhuravlev while he was working as a consultant on the set of a Hollywood film titled Snake Island. German federal prosecutors identified Zhuravlev as a suspect in the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which connected Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Zhuravlev denies any involvement in the bombings, which damaged both the operational Nord Stream 1 and the then-inactive Nord Stream 2 pipelines. A Polish court previously refused to enforce a German arrest warrant against him, ruling that German authorities lacked jurisdiction. Zhuravlev’s legal team is now working to prevent his extradition to Germany.
Why it matters
The arrest revives a high-stakes investigation into the $11bn energy infrastructure sabotage that remains a central point of tension in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
