Ukrainian Drones Strike Yandex AI Data Center in Kaluga

· World · Al Jazeera, Ars Technica

Ukrainian drone strikes have partly disabled an AI data center operated by Russian digital giant Yandex in the Kaluga region southwest of Moscow. The attack follows a separate strike on Thursday that shut down a major Yandex data hub in Sasovo in the Ryazan region, which housed two of the three supercomputers used to develop the company's AI models. Yandex stated that the operations are facing severe disruption while teams work continuously to keep essential consumer apps and services running. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the strikes as a mirror-like response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centers and telecommunications infrastructure. Ukrainian forces also targeted missile production facilities in the Tver region and an intercontinental ballistic missile disassembly center in the Nizhny Novgorod region overnight.

Why it matters

The strikes mark an expansion of Ukraine's military campaign into Russia's critical technology infrastructure, directly targeting the computational backbone of domestic AI and digital services.
