UN Backs New Map to Correct Africa's True Size

The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the use of the Equal Earth map, which provides a more accurate representation of continental sizes. The initiative, led by Togo, aims to move away from the 16th-century Mercator projection that visually diminishes Africa's size compared to land masses near the poles. The resolution passed with 164 votes in favour, 1 against, and 6 abstentions. The United States was the only country to vote against the measure, citing concerns that it promoted an ideological agenda. Togo plans to update its school geography materials to reflect this change by the end of the year.
