UN Declares November 27 International Day Against Child Marriage

The United Nations has officially designated November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. The resolution was proposed by Bhuwan Ribhu, founder of the Just Rights for Children organization, and formally tabled by Sierra Leone. The date holds significance for India as it marks the anniversary of the government's 'Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat' campaign launched in 2024. The campaign, which has been supported by NDTV, aims to eradicate child marriage through community and government cooperation. Recent data from the National Family Health Survey indicates that 23.3% of women aged 20-24 were married before the legal age.

The UN designation provides global momentum for anti-child marriage initiatives and sets a 2030 target for governments worldwide to end the practice.
