UN Demands Access to Gaza to Investigate Potential War Crimes
· World · Euronews, The Hindu
The United Nations has formally requested that Israel grant international investigators access to all areas of Gaza to examine sites where human remains are being recovered. UN rights chief Volker Turk stated that the discovery of remains of entire families in areas flattened by bombing raises serious concerns about potential war crimes. According to the Palestinian Civil Defence, over 630 bodies have been recovered from rubble since last November, with an estimated 8,000 people still missing. The war began following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel. Gaza's health ministry reports that the total death toll from the conflict has surpassed 73,000.
Why it matters
The UN's call for independent scrutiny increases diplomatic pressure on Israel regarding its military conduct and the scale of civilian casualties in Gaza.
