Underdog Demos 32MB Speech Model for Edge Devices

· Technology · TechCrunch

Underdog, a startup, has launched a game featuring its new 32MB voice model, Woof, which operates within a browser without an internet connection. The model has 31 million parameters and is available for download. This follows the release of Bark, a 167MB speech-to-text model designed for edge devices. Sigil Wen, Underdog's founder, stated his aim is to enable capable AI models to run on users' devices, ensuring data ownership. The company also offers a 27-billion-parameter model for laptops and a waitlisted app as a local alternative to Muse and Instinct.

Why it matters

This development could enable more private and local AI experiences on personal devices, reducing reliance on cloud providers and enhancing data ownership for users. It may also lead to new applications for AI in areas like local assistants and personalised content.
