UNEP Report Warns 1.5 Degree Celsius Temperature Breach Is Inevitable

A new report from the UN Environment Programme states that it is no longer possible for the world to contain the global temperature rise to within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The report indicates that annual average temperatures are now expected to consistently exceed this threshold. Even under the most optimistic scenarios, global temperatures are projected to climb by at least 1.8 degrees Celsius before potentially declining. Scientists note that there are no remaining plausible pathways to keep warming below the 1.5 degree limit, which was a core goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The report warns that extreme weather events, including droughts and floods, will likely become more frequent and severe as warming continues.
