UNIFIL Reports 137 Daily Projectiles as Israel‑Lebanon Tensions Surge
· World · Al Jazeera, Times of India
UNIFIL said it recorded an average of 137 projectiles fired per day from August 5‑16, with 208 on Saturday and 185 on Sunday, signalling a surge in Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon. The increase comes despite the June 26 ceasefire agreement, which requires Hezbollah’s disarmament but not the withdrawal of Israeli forces that occupy parts of Lebanon. Hezbollah has rejected the deal, insisting Israel must leave the country unconditionally. UN peacekeepers continue patrols and remove road obstacles while the Lebanese government and President Joseph Aoun support extending UNIFIL’s mandate, which expires at year‑end amid debate over its future. The UN Security Council Resolution 1701 remains the framework for restoring stability in the region.
Why it matters
The rising projectile fire endangers Lebanese civilians, disrupting daily life and raising concerns about the region’s stability.
