Unrest And Social Media Rumours Prompt Security Review At Punjab Universities
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
Lovely Professional University in Phagwara and Chitkara University in Rajpura are reviewing their security arrangements following recent campus unrest driven by unverified social media messages. At Lovely Professional University, protests broke out after a message alleged a female student was sexually assaulted by an outsider, leading to property damage, arson, police clashes, and a blockade of National Highway 44. Police registered an FIR and formed a Special Investigation Team, while the university denied the allegation. Days earlier, hundreds of hostel students at Chitkara University gathered following rumours about missing female students, which police later found to be baseless. Panjab University in Chandigarh subsequently issued an advisory urging students not to share unverified information.
Why it matters
